Dadar Market Located at Dadar, this is one of the biggest flower and vegetable markets in South Mumbai. It came up in the early 1900s, to cater to the needs of the people re-housed in the Dadar -Matunga area according to the City Improvement Trust's lofty plan. While it too, has suffered a few setbacks after the APMC market at Vashi became the hub of all wholesale activity, one wouldn't know this by seeing the numbers who throng the vegetable-strewn paths between the galas.
Gateway of India, Mumbai's principle landmark. This arch of yellow basalt was erected on the waterfront in 1924 to commemorate King George V's visit to Mumbai in 1911.
From the Gateway of India drive to the New Gothic rich architectural delight of the Mumbai University. In the university garden see the Raja Bai Clock Tower that consists of 5 elaborately decorated storeys. The tower is 280 ft. in height commanding a fine view of the city.
Victoria Terminus Opened on the New Year’s Day in 1882, this Gothic building housing the main railway station of Mumbai was designed by F.W. Stevens and was named after the then Queen Empress on Jubilee day in 1887. It is also declared as an urban heritage site. It was renamed as Chatrapathi Shivaji in 1996 after addition of an underground Suburban terminus
Mani Bhavan has a story to tell as it housed Gandhi’s occasionally during the times when he grew in stature and strength, from a queer type of an agitator to a world figure by successfully introducing Satyagraha.
(Individual as well as mass) as a new and effective weapon tonight all evil and injustice.
Later visit Dhobi Ghat, A unique feature of Mumbai, the dhobi is a traditional laundryman, who will collect your dirty linen, wash it, and return it neatly pressed to your doorstep. All for a pittance. The "laundries" are called "Ghats": row upon row of concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone. The clothes are soaked in sudsy water, thrashed on the flogging stones, then tossed into huge vats of boiling starch and hung out to dry. Next they are ironed and piled into neat bundles. The most famous of these Dhobi Ghats is at Saat Rasta near Mahalaxmi Station where almost two hundred dhobis and their families work together in what has always been a hereditary occupation.
In between you may get lucky and see the very famous “Mumbai Dabbawala” - one who carries the lunch - box, in the Indian city of Mumbai. They carry and deliver freshly made food from customer’s home in a lunch box (Dabba) and deliver it to offices. It may sound simple, but it’s not. It is actually a highly specialized trade that has evolved in its current form over a century and has become integral to Mumbai’s culture. They are about 5000 in number and deliver approximately 200,000 tiffin boxes every day.
After sightseeing return to hotel.
